Unpacking the hidden curriculum

Student guide to the hidden curriculum

This practical, student-facing resource is aimed at new students starting university. Anticipating the sort of questions students might have as they start to navigate university life, the guide has been created to help explain some of the terminology and expressions they are likely to encounter and help them settle in at their chosen institution.

This resource was commissioned by QAA Membership and produced by Dr Pam Birtill, Dr Richard Harris and Madeleine Pownall at the University of Leeds. It was originally published in August 2021 and expanded in May 2022.

The student value journey

Examining the different stages of the undergraduate journey helps us to better understand the student disposition to engage and the role of key actors at a given time. This toolkit explores the six distinct stages of the undergraduate journey and offers activities and guidance relevant to staff across member institutions. The Toolkit was commissioned by QAA Membership and produced by Dr Elizabeth Farrier-Williams (Student Experience Manager, University of West London). Dr Farrier-Williams delivered a presentation in relation to these resources at our Member Network event on 23 June 2021.

Toolkit: Understanding and engaging with the student value journey

This Toolkit is divided into three sections and the first describes how student engagement changes and develops over their university journey based on their perspective of value creation. The second section showcases how to identify the value journey in your own institution, by discussing a case study at St Mary’s University Careers Service. This case study explains how to analyse information on your offerings to identify how to attract future students. The final section provides activities for use across the undergraduate year group which can be applied in the academic environment and relate to the student value journey.
